Pojects and Gallery Show

I felt my partner project was strong and would like to display it in the gallery show. I would need a projector for the display. I think this can work with the theme of the gallery. I also want to add on to the video by shoot people around the U of O campus to see their reaction to the object.
I also will be displaying my second individual project in the gallery. My second individual project is about the change from old to new. I will be show to image of an aspect of old china and one of new china. How the people, culture and landscape of china is changing. On each image I will write in Chinese “way in” for the new and “way out” for the old. I am planning between 4-8 images, so 2-4 set of images. I planning display them in rolling poster advisement like the ones I saw in Shanghai. It would also go along with the idea for the gallery theme.

Last day then Bye Bye China

Today a couple of us went to the MOCA, an art museum. It was set back into a park, had great architecture and great art inside. After looking around for a bit Steven and I went to a nearby mall and had lunch at a Japanese restaurant. It was pretty good. We walk half the way back to the hotel in the mall. It was an underground mall and air-conditioned too. Back at the hotel we had a review and from that we went to a vegetarian restaurant for dinner. The food was good. Back at the hotel a couple of was went to the hotel bar and hang out with the two bartenders. We ended up play a drinking game with them. Oh and we song a little KTV.
The next day we wake up and got all check out and left for the airport. The flight was sorter then on the way there. My parents meet me at the Portland airport.

Saturday on Nanjing Dong Road

Today was a free day so we wake up at 9 and round down to the western breakfast. After we hang out in the hotel room and work a little. Around 12 we went out to Nanjing Dong road which is kind of like Times Square. I was with Madelyn and Steven, we went walked the street and went into a mall. There was a store called “Easy Shop” and it was a girl underwear store. Man I love Chinese transfer to English. After walking around a bit more, we went to a subway then it started to pour down rain. We waited to the rain to lighten up and we run to catch a taxi. We ate the subway back at the hotel room. After working for a bit we went to eat at a western place which had pizza.

Gardens and Running Catching

Today we went to the city of Suzhou about 45km after from Shanghai. Suzhou is famous for their gardens and it’s the sister city to Portland. The first garden we went to as a group then back to the bus and to find another garden. But the bus drive didn’t know where he was going. We end up stop at a historic street and walk down it. The street run along a canal and was dot with old buildings. We got about 2 hours for lunch and to meet at another garden just up the road. Madelyn, Sam and I found nice place on the canal. It was a western place and we had pizza which was good. After finishing lunch we walk to the garden. This garden had a zoo in it with a panda. It was neat to see the animals. At the zoo we decided to break up the group, so people decided to go back to shanghai on the bus and the other decided to stay later and take the train back. And from the 8 who stayed 3 with off on they own. So the 5 of us (Christian, Matt, Edwin, Braeden), went to a Buddha Temple “Beisi tower”. We climbed all the way to the top. From there we went up with the group of 3 at the train. They got tickets for the 7:45 train but we could only get trains for the 8:45 in first class, ”damn” so the 5 of us decided to go out to eat. Went ate at nice place next to the first place we were going to eat at. The first place was to spendy. After eating we took a taxi to the train station but I took longer than we thought it would and Edwin had to change another taxi. At the train station we looked for Edwin. Braeden just happen to see Edwin across the square so we started running after him. We caught up to him and run into the train station. We got into line but something we funny because the line so not moving and we need to board the train in minutes. We were in the wrong line, the right line was next to us so we run down the line and hand the train people the tickets. Then run down the train platform to get to your car and we just made it. The train ride was nice and we got to shanghai in 45 minutes. After leaving the train station we walk to the subway and got on subway line 1. From the subway it was a sort walk to the hotel.

Day 1 and 2 in Shanghai

The train people wake us up at 5 in the morning. From the train, we checked into the Hew Harbour hotel. We ate lunch at McDonald and it was fun. At 2 we meet up and with to a garden place. It was pretty touristy. Sam and I wonder around for a bit then went back to the hotel for dinner. We ate at an ok place for dinner and from dinner went to the Jinmao Tower. The Jinmao Tower 88 stores and we went to the top. The view was awesome, shanghai is neat at night. To get back to the hotel we took a boat then walked along the bund. The bund is a street with a lot of old banking building.
Thursday, we leave the hotel at 8:50 and walked to the Shanghai Museum. Madelyn, Sam and I spend about 3 hours walking around the museum. The museum was full of ancient art, such as ceramics sculpture and coins. After that we all meet at the Shanghai Biennial. Sam, Madelyn and I went to an art district kind of like the ones in Beijing. After a nice taxi back to the hotel we went to a Chinese-Muslin restaurant that was tasty.

There was a lot of running around before the show and we ate lunch in the gallery spaces. After and a little more setting, we went to meet the president of the university. After the meeting with the president of the university, we went back the gallery and had an opening. There was a couple of speak and a ribbon cut. The show should be up for 2 weeks. We only spent an hour at the gallery show before we had to leave to go back to the dorms and pack. Sadly we had to quickly leave but we still have time to say good bye to your partners. After packing up we boarded the bus to go to your lasted dinner in Jinan. The dinner was wonderful and we have tons to eat. From the restaurant we went to the train station and boarded your soft sleeper cabin. It was very nice and I had a good sleep.

Monday

Another early morning, 6:30 breakfast and we loaded the bus to Zhoucun. Zhoucun is an ancient trading center on the Silk Road. We went to a Cultural Festival, there were a few speaks and then an hours or so of sing and dance. It was outside and it was a sunny day… It was neat to watch but I couldn’t understand what people were singing about but it was a great honor to be invited to the Festival. After the festival we walked around the famous street looking into the shops and we got this crack like snack. We walked around for about an hour and a half then went to lunch at a nice hotel. I had a taste of some chicken heart. It some chewy but I think the weird or more interesting was eating fried locust or that’s what I was told.

The day is not over yet so i might add more... so stay tuned in. but i dont think you guys will be reading this because its 2 into the morning or you might.

Sunday the Funday

We started Sunday by going to the First Spring under Heaven “Baotu Spring”. It was a large garden/park with spring dotted here and there. I walked around with Madelyn and we had your picture taken of us everywhere we went in the park. Everywhere we have been Chinese people are taking pictures of us or with us. It’s kind of funny, we are like stars. From the springs we meet your partners at 1000 Buddha Mountain “Qianfo shan”. We walked around the mountain then we happen to run into a place that you could shoot bows and arrow. We had a great time shooting at the targets with your partners. After playing with the bows and arrows we started walking more up the mountain. We stop at a temple were we with in. The temple was neat and Cindy “lexis partner” show me how to pray. On the way back down the mountain, I had seen the sign for bump cars. It was one of the funniest times I’ve had in china with your Chinese partners. Everyone had a great time. We loaded the bus and when to the KTV which is a Karaoke. We got there earlier some we when to KFC for lunch. It was ok and it tasted like home but no sauces. I ordered popcorn chicken and no sauce. I’m still waiting to go to McDonald’s. Oh and I was another pizza hut. After lunch we got our room at the KTV places and started singing. It was a lot of fun and after a couple of us when walking around Jinan. We saw a mall and a large square. “I think it was in the middle of the city. We had a couple of the Chinese student with us showing us around. We stop at a tea house for a drink and ride a taxi back to the old campus. We just ate at the old campus cafeteria for dinner.

Friday and Saturday “work work work and play?”

Today was another workday. Quiang got the wood for the project so we started working. By the end of the day we have it mostly painted and all together. I got to use some power tools. We had to do a little cutting so we went to the Special Arts and Crafts Building where they had some tools. My partner and the other people in the room were nervous about me using the tool powers but I told them I know want was up. Sunday was another workday. We finish up on some touch up painting and stated shooting the video part of the project. By the end of the day we finished shooting and editing. When we were shooting the wood object kind of fall apart but we easily fixed it. We switch from nail to screws; a much better idea.

Thursday

Today I wake up a 6:30 to go to breakfast at 7. We have to get up early every morning but today was even earlier. L Today we went to Weifang. Weifang is famous for kits and prints. We visited a kit shop and watched how the kits are made. It was neat! We ate lunch at a nice place with the plates; cup and spoon were air-sealed. Done with lunch we visited a print shop but the master was not there (I think he went to work at a wedding. So we went to another print shop. We watched the master make some prints and after he was finished he let us made some. It was fun and I’m going to look into it back at the university.

Tuesday

We went to Confusion’s Temple and Graveyard in the city of Qufu. Confusion’s Temple was very nice, you have to pass through many gate as you walk through the temple. We have a tour guide to lead us through Confusion’s Temple. The next stop was Confusion’s graveyard where only descendent of Confusion can be buried. We walked down a long walkway that had walls on each side. It was a large park with a couple of temples. From Confusion’s graveyard we went to a four star restaurant were government official go to eat after visiting Confusion’s Temple. After another great meal we started on our way to Mountain Tainan. At the bottom of the Mountain Tainan we switched bus to a smaller one and raced up the mountain to where the gondola took us to the top of Mountain Tainan to the temples. There is a path up to the top of Mountain Tainan but it would have taken to long. We walk around to the different temple and places on top of mountain Tainan. At the different Temple sets people ah locked up locks to be stone in the temples. The view was awesome and it reminded me of places back at home. We got the last gondola and bus down the mountain. We loaded the bus and headed back to the University and like always there was a large dinner waiting for us.

Monday = meet the partner

Today we went to the Changing campus. Form the bus we walked into a classroom where your Chinese partners were waiting. My partners name is Qiang Chen. He is a TV and Film major and he comes from around Mountain Taian. We are going to visit it tomorrow. We talked about your partner project and started some work on it. After Lunch we walked around campus and visited the different building and departments. After the tour we worked some more. For dinner our partner took a couple of us out to dinner. Are partners are very nice and pay for everything but we got to pay for the taxi back to the campus. In china it is costume for the host to treat the guest very well. Its going to be a fight to pay for anything.

Here we come Jinan

Sunday was a lazy start of just packing for the train ride to for Jinan and the SUDA in the afternoon. We checked out of the hostel in Beijing and got a taxi to the train station. The train station was large and we tried to find a McDonald’s but we found nothing. There were just McDonald Sign and empty space where McDonald should be. We got on the fast train to Jinan so it only took us 3 hours from Beijing. At the train Station in Jinan some people from SUDA were waiting for us. We boarded a bus to the Qianfo shan campus where we check into the dorms. I’m rooming with Sam and we are on the 2nd floor. Form the dorms we walked to a restaurant where we had dinner. It’s was a large dinner with many speeches and some singing at the end. The President of SUDA wife was at the dinner in place of the president and a few professors too.

food Food FOOD!?!

KFC and McDonalds are everywhere but one saw one Pizza Hut and Sizzler.

Great Wall

The bus picked us up at 7am to go to the great wall. Professor Lang cousins came along if us. It was a neat drive and it was nice to be out in the countryside. We visited the house of the man who made that part of the great wall famous. Sadly he was not there but we meet with his wife. After a little bit of tea, we started up the path to the great wall. There were so many stairs and all were different size and heights. The views were awesome. The wall ran along the ridge top of the mountains. We hiked for most of the day and pass through 28 towers. To get down for the mountain most of us used the zip line. It was fun and I made a video on the way down. We ate at a farms restaurant and had a farms dinner that was great. After dinner back on the bus to Beijing. Back in Beijing some of us decided to go out on the town. We went to a bar district. We all had fun and song some American sing with the Chinese bar band. Temple of Heaven

Today we went to the Temple of Heaven. We started out at Tiananmen square and walked the same path as the emperors would have to the temple. The temple of heaven was a place where the emperors would go to talk to god. He would stand alone in a large open area with a square running around it and he would stand on a circle stone platform. The circle in Chinese culture stands for earth and the circle stands for heaven. It symbolizes the joining of heaven and earth. After about 2 hours of walking around we have some free time so a couple of us went to the counterfeit mall, it was an interesting experts.

Day 3 Forbidden Fun "what a neat blog title"

A couple of us went to a little bakery near the hostel for breakfast. After that we walled to the Jingshan Park and the Forbidden City. The Jingshan Park was full of local people dancing, singing, playing instruments, exercising and just hanging around. The park is like a back yard for the people. The Forbidden was huge; I wish we have more time. I don’t see must likely 2/3 of the things to see in the Forbidden City.
Exiting the Forbidden City you walk right in to Tian’anmen square. Tian’anmen square is very large with my government buildings around it. I was neat to be in Tain’anmen square after seeing it on the TV and learning about it. We did a little group project and we got a crowd of people around us. One of the police came and got people to move along. The security was pretty tiet, lots of police around.
We ended the night at a tea house near tian’anmen square. At the tea house we saw a traditional performance. It was fun. We saw a guy spine a large pot on his head and there was a lot of singing and playing of instruments.

Then we visited the Central academy of Art in Beijing where we meet one of the designers of the 2008 Olympics medal. We got to walk around then campus which was really neat. I got to see the sculpture department much may need a little jealous. It was a large covered courtyard and many large classes/studios. “Very neat” We went back to 798 and exploded some more. The last stop we made was to the studio of the professor we meet at Central Academy of Art and designer of the medal. His studio was neat and after we looked around it. His student took us all out to dinner at their favorite restaurant. The food was awesome and it just keeps on coming and coming. I think there were 14 or 15 plates of food and all were great.

1st day

Just got here in Beijing today! Yay! We run around the Beijing international airport for a bit then loaded up in two vans. The van ride to the hotel was interesting… but I got a number of pictures of the building lining the highways and the sits on the way to the hotel. After arriving to the hotel, a couple of us wondered around the street and found a nice little shop. We bought a couple beers and sat outside the shop drinking them. We got back the whole group when out to dinner at a tasty dumpling place. We order a lot of food.
